Meet Therese Rawsthorne, our new Creative Director.
Celebrated for her ability to create beautiful clothes that are both wearable and surprising, she brings to the brand over ten years’ worth of fashion industry experience, including time at Issey Miyake, Oswald Boateng and her own namesake label.
We caught up with Therese to talk travel, family, and the inspiration behind her debut collection, Amante Amore.
Tell us about your experience as Creative Director for sass & bide…
It’s been an amazing experience so far. sass & bide is such a special brand, and I feel honoured to work with such talented and passionate people.
Your debut collection is called Amante Amore. What was the inspiration behind this?
Amante Amore translates to ‘love love love’ in Latin. It’s about embracing optimism, joy and curiosity. The collection was inspired by Morocco, its beautiful architecture, colour and decorative arts. We wanted to capture a modern bohemian spirit retracing the Overland Trail.
The Amante Amore muse is a travelling free spirit who collects beautiful treasures and trinkets wherever she goes. Where are your favourite places to travel?
I really enjoy going to places that are a bit off the beaten track. My first trip to Cambodia many years before it became a popular destination was definitely one of my most memorable. The friendliness of people was amazing in a place that was still devastated by its recent history.
What trinkets and treasures have you collected from your own travels?
I buy books and zines wherever I go, because you can find things that aren’t available elsewhere, although it does create luggage issues. I’ve picked up some great vintage over the years also, including a Zandra Rhodes dress which is not so wearable, but really good to look at.
What ignited your love of fashion and design?
It’s the power of transformation! It’s a power that’s available to anyone, and you can express so much through clothing.
You have four-year-old twins. How do you manage work and family balance?
You just have to roll with it and focus on creating quality time, and loving the small moments. It will always be a tricky balance, and they grow so fast! Be present and don’t sweat the small stuff.
Which treasured pieces from your wardrobe will you be passing on to your girls?
My beautiful sass & bide gallery pieces!
What inspires your creativity?
The feeling you get when you put something on that just makes you go “wow”. That’s the most exciting moment.
